Climate Past, Present & Future
Ancient Earth Globe – I love this, as will any Palaeo geek. See what the earth looked like X million years ago.
IPCC 6th Assessment Report 2022, Working Group 3: Mitigation of Climate Change. Summary for Policymakers.
AR6 Synthesis Report Climate Change 2023 – Lots here including downloadable content including the full AR6 Climate Change report, presentation and summary for policymakers.
Global Climate Dashboard – What does the current climate look like compared to recent history? A quick graphic view of many metrics can be seen here, including the Mauna Loa Observatory measure of CO2 going back to 1958 – this is generally what you see whenever a graph of CO2 is shown.
Climate Visuals – Ed Hawkins (Uni. of Reading and NCAS) has a library of freely available climate visuals on Git Hub.
Climate Stripes – Here you can view and download the Climate Stripes for your location.
Earth System
SpaceWeather.com – I’ve used this for a very long time. It’s a great resource for all your space weather enthusiasm. Up-to-date information on sun spot number, near-earth asteroids, auroral activity, polar stratospheric and noctilucent clouds, cosmic rays and more.
Latest Volcanic activity – Not just the latest activity in the weekly report. The Smithsonian Institution have put together a fairly comprehensive resource. It includes an encyclopaedia of active and non-active volcanoes including eruption history, e.g., see Vesuvius.
Latest Earthquake activity – The US Geological Survey (USGS) is a comprehensive go to for latest earthquake activity across the globe. If you’re looking for something closer to home, view the British Geological Survey (BGS) website.
National Snow & Ice Data Centre – Want to know what sea ice extent looks like?
El Nino/La Nina latest – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration provide updates on the latest El Nino/La Nina situation and forecasts.
Meteorology
Latest Hurricane/Cyclone activity – The National Hurricane Centre and Central Pacific Hurricane Centre cover latest cyclone/hurricane activity across the Central Pacific, Eastern Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. They publish advisories at regular intervals during potential and active periods.
Weathercharts.org – Another well used site. This is an encyclopaedia of Meteorological resource, not just weather charts, but links to satellite observations, forecast model outputs, Ice cover etc, etc. A few of the links have broke – one link sent me to a foot massage website! Some of my most used links are included on this page.
Met Office Surface Analysis Charts – A meteorologists go to for a quick snap shot of what’s going on.
GFS model charts at NetWeather.tv – A great resource showing model outputs from the US GFS model. I’ve mostly used this in the past to understand forecasts leading up to cold weather outbreaks in the UK, i.e., do we have the right meteorological conditions for snow?
Data
UK Climate Data Sets (Met Office) – A great resource for various data covering UK climate, including gridded UK climate data and some of the longest continuous observational data in the world found on the Historical Station Data page.
Climate Data Portal – The Met Office Climate Data Portal has a number of data resources on offer, including future projections.
